Standardizing Hydrant Testing Terminology

A water distribution system operates most efficiently when customers do not see it.When customers open their faucets and safe water comes out, they probably do not think about the science and engineering that makes this happen.A fire hydrant test may be the only maintenance activity publicly performed by water utilities.Hydrants are a critical component of many water distribution systems, providing water supply for fire protection as well as street-cleaning and construction activities. They enable distribution system flushing to improve water quality, and hydrants can provide clues about what is occurring underground within distribution systems.

Abstract

A water distribution system operates most efficiently when customers do not see it.When customers open their faucets and safe water comes out, they probably do not think about the science and engineering that makes this happen.A fire hydrant test may be the only maintenance activity publicly performed by water utilities.Hydrants are a critical component of many water distribution systems, providing water supply for fire protection as well as street-cleaning and construction activities. They enable distribution system flushing to improve water quality, and hydrants can provide clues about what is occurring underground within distribution systems.
