Exploring Cooperating Teachers’ Perceptions About the Role and Purpose of Practicum in Teacher Education
Teacher education programs are fundamental in shaping the quality of education system by preparing student teachers (STs) with the necessary knowledge and skills for effective classroom teaching. A critical component of these programs is the practicum, which bridges the gap between theoretical learning and practical application. This study explores cooperating teachers' (CTs) perceptions of the role and purpose of the practicum. Data were collected through survey questionnaires from 205 CTs across various regions of the Maldives. The findings indicated that the majority of CTs viewed the practicum as an essential element of teacher education. The three key themes emerged include: providing context for STs to gain first-hand teaching experience, facilitating their professional development, and offering opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in real classroom settings. In addition, the findings also highlight the importance of the practicum in fostering STs' growth as reflective practitioners, enhancing their teaching competencies, and helping them develop their professional identity. Based on these insights, the study recommends strengthening collaborations between teacher education institutions and CTs, offering professional development for CTs, and ensuring diverse and comprehensive practicum experiences for STs. These strategies would improve the effectiveness of the practicum in preparing future educators.
