International student mobility as an internationalization strategy and challenge for higher education of Ukraine

This study investigates international academic mobility among Ukrainian students during Russia's ongoing military aggression. It aims to establish how the nature of international mobility of students from Ukrainian universities changed after February 24, 2022, the beginning of the Russia's full-scale military invasion of Ukraine. I base my analysis on literary sources, the web pages of Ukrainian universities, and the reports of university rectors between 2021 and 2023. I also analysed data from surveys and interviews with students at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and Ukrainian graduate students at the University of Oxford. This allowed me to discover the peculiarities of academic mobility among Ukrainian students after 2022. I summarize student reflections on mobility in terms of benefits for both personal and social development. At the same time, I pay attention to possible negative consequences for the future of Ukraine resulting from the international mobility of Ukrainian students due to the probability of “brain drain”.
