System dynamics modeling of the layer chicken feed supply chain in Simeulue regency

Abstract This study aims to assess the condition of the layer chicken feed supply chain in Simeulue Regency and design an optimal model. The methodology employed is system dynamics, a systemic thinking approach that takes into account feedback loops and delays to understand the complex behavioral dynamics within the supply chain. Primary data were collected through interviews with relevant business actors, such as poultry farmers, traders, feed distributors, producers, sellers, BUMDes, and decision-makers involved in input provision, production, and marketing. Secondary data were obtained from related institutions. Model formulation and data analysis were conducted using Vensim PLE software. The findings indicate that the feed supply chain in Simeulue Regency is overly long and frequently experiences significant delays, necessitating a shortening of the supply chain to expedite feed delivery and optimize egg production. This study successfully developed nine sub-models of the layer chicken feed supply chain, including the sub-models for business actors, feed production capacity, feed production, layer chicken breeding, feed transportation, feed inventory, market growth, labor, and financial dynamics. These models provide essential insights into improving supply chain efficiency and ensuring a smooth feed supply in Simeulue Regency.
