Not-So-“Eternal” Objects: The Case for an Expanding Set of Universals and a Refocused Ontological Principle

Abstract In Whitehead's philosophy of organism as laid out in Process and Reality, it is claimed that the primordial nature of God contains all of the eternal objects, Whitehead's term for universals. This article argues for an alternative view; it is possible to have a limited set of initial universals that are ordered for relevance but then a much larger expanding set of universals, which emerge via chaotic dynamics within the processes of innumerable concrescences.

Abstract

Abstract In Whitehead's philosophy of organism as laid out in Process and Reality, it is claimed that the primordial nature of God contains all of the eternal objects, Whitehead's term for universals. This article argues for an alternative view; it is possible to have a limited set of initial universals that are ordered for relevance but then a much larger expanding set of universals, which emerge via chaotic dynamics within the processes of innumerable concrescences.
