Design of a Prescription Management and Medication Availability Checking Web Application for Zimbabwe Using NLP and Database Querying

The increasing digitalisation of healthcare requires the development of secure and efficient systems for the management of medical prescriptions. This paper presents the design of a web-based application that enables physicians to securely send prescriptions following patient consultations. The design includes a Natural Language Processing (NLP) engine that is specifically trained to extract important information from these prescriptions, such as drug names, dosages and quantities. The design describes how the application will connect to multiple pharmacy databases via APIs or direct queries to provide real-time information on drug availability and pricing. This integration ensures that prescriptions are not only processed correctly but also checked against the latest inventory data. The proposed system architecture has been designed with security, efficiency and scalability in mind, making it suitable for use in a wide range of healthcare facilities. The paper describes the technical architecture, including data flow, component interaction, and the rationale for the NLP algorithms and database connection methods chosen. The proposed system design will significantly improve the accuracy and speed of prescription processing, underlining its potential as a valuable tool in modern healthcare
