THIPWM Based Three Level ANPC Converter for Bidirectional EV Charging
The electric vehicle (EV) sector is experiencing rapid growth, driven by global environmental concerns and the push for cleaner transportation. Converters are critical components in EV applications, with the challenge of selecting efficient topologies that maintain high performance under various load conditions. While traditional 2-level inverters and boost converters dominate, their efficiency decreases significantly under low-load conditions. Recent advancements have introduced transformerless grid-connected inverters, improving efficiency, yet issues such as common-mode voltage and ground leakage currents affect power quality. This paper presents the use of a three-level Active Neutral Point Clamped (3L-ANPC) converter for bidirectional EV charging applications, employing Third Harmonic Injection Pulse Width Modulation (THIPWM) for enhanced DC-link utilization and efficiency. Simulation results in MATLAB/Simulink, corroborated by experimental data, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in reducing Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and improving power conversion efficiency.
