Loss Reduction and Power Quality Enhancement of Distribution system Using FACTS Devices

The Study emphasizes the crucial role of D-STATCOM placement and sizing in enhancing network efficiency and reliability. Leveraging PSO offers a systematic and efficient approach for optimizing D-FACTS devices, contributing to more resilient and sustainable energy infrastructures. The given results highlights the practical feasibility of PSO-based optimization techniques in real-world distribution network management. The approach is implemented on radial distribution network of the IEEE 33-bus, with PSO determining optimal D-STATCOM locations and sizes at buses 3, 6, and 33, with corresponding sizes of 515 KVar, 475 KVar, and 207 KVar respectively. This optimization strategy results in a substantial reduction in total network power losses (21.26%) and significant voltage profile improvement (0.8542%). Furthermore, system reconfiguration is performed, with PSO identifying optimal DSTATCOM locations and sizes at buses 33, 4, and 5, with sizes of 559 KVar, 805 KVar, and 275 KVar respectively. After reconfiguration, PSO achieves a greater reduction in total power losses (26.58%) and remarkable voltage profile enhancement (0.8796%). Notably, the computational efficiency of PSO is commendable.
