Optimized Standalone Hybrid Microgrid Design for Reliable Electrification in Remote Rural Communities
A standalone micro-grid is crucial for electrifying remote rural areas without grid access. To ensure reliable power, frequency and voltage must stay within specified limits. Renewable sources increase intermittency and reduce system inertia, causing stability issues. A proposed hybrid micro-grid features wind and solar renewable sources, fuel cell and diesel generator backups, AC and 48V DC loads, and battery and super-capacitor storage. A three-phase inverter links the DC bus to the AC side. The goal is to design a 16.5kW hybrid micro-grid for rural communities, including a 48V DC lighting system. The system is simulated in MATLAB SIMULINK for scenarios with and without renewable sources, considering daytime and nighttime conditions. Generation must meet demand, maintaining nominal DC voltage, with graphical analysis provided. Thus, a 16.5kW hybrid micro-grid with a 48V DC lighting system with fuel cell backup is designed and simulated.
