Design and Simulation of a DC-Fast Charging System for Electric Vehicles

With recent advancement in EVs and requirement for more adoption of EVs, the charging infrastructure development and technology development are the main focus. The problems, customers faced on using with electric vehicles are mostly on taking too much time on charging the vehicles that can be solved by developing a fast-charger. In this paper, the issues related to the charging time of electric vehicles and the problems that comes with it, and the topologies on making a fast charger for electric vehicles is studied. A DC fast charging system is designed and simulated using MATLAB Simulink software and the results are discussed about making a feasible fast-charger that can operate bidirectional. This can be used to charge the battery from the grid when power is required by the EV battery and excess energy from the battery of the EV can be sent back to the grid when the EV has excess energy not in used. The simulation result shows the bidirectional operation and the design parameters are maintained. The Total Harmonics Distortion is 1.92% and it is under the IEEE standard of 5% for below 65 kV system. This can make the grid more reliable as large number of batteries can be connected to the grid.
