Fuzzy Logic-Driven Protection Coordination for Robust DFIG System Operation Under Symmetrical Fault Conditions

Ensuring the reliability and stability of Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG)-based wind energy systems during grid disturbances, particularly symmetrical faults, is crucial for modern power systems. Conventional protection techniques such as the Rotor End Series Resistance Crowbar (RESRC), Rotor End Parallel Resistance Crowbar (REPRC), and DC Link Chopper (DLC) have been individually employed to mitigate these disturbances. However, these methods often face challenges, including increased mechanical stress, converter damage, and suboptimal fault ride-through (FRT) capabilities. This paper presents an advanced protection coordination strategy driven by fuzzy logic, designed to integrate and optimize the RESRC, REPRC, and DLC techniques for enhanced system resilience under symmetrical fault conditions. The presented approach not only ensures the continuity of grid operations but also minimizes the risks of overcurrent and overvoltage, thereby extending the operational life of the DFIG system. The fuzzy logic controller dynamically adjusts protection actions based on real-time fault severity, providing a robust, adaptive, and efficient solution for fault management in wind energy systems. MATLAB Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of this coordinated approach in maintaining grid stability and protecting critical components during severe grid disturbances over conventional method.
