A case report of cannabis-induced bipolar-type schizoaffective disorder with persistent grandiose delusions

Research on cannabis use and psychotic disorder association primarily focuses on schizophrenia to the detriment of other psychotic disorders, such as schizoaffective disorder (SAD).SAD is an infrequent severe mental illness characterized by a complex interplay of mood and psychotic symptoms. We present a young male who developed persistent psychotic symptoms, including grandiose delusions and episodic mania, in the context of chronic heavy cannabis use.A suboptimal antipsychotic response and the reinforcement of delusional beliefs through algorithm-based social media exacerbated his condition. This case highlights the potential role of cannabis in the onset and progression of SAD.
