Aberration-corrected TEM study on the influence of HCO3−/ CO32− concentration and Cl− on FeCr15Ni15Mo2 alloy in alkaline solutions
Carbonation of concrete pore solution results in a drop of pH value and introduction of HCO 3 − /CO 3 2− . The drop of pH has been identified as an important factor in causing general corrosion by destabilizing passive films on stainless steels. However, the effect of HCO 3 − /CO 3 2− concentration on the structure and composition of passive film and its interaction mechanism with Cl − are studied insufficiently due to the lack of direct experimental information at nano-meter/atomic scale. Here, by means of aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, we show that low concentration of HCO 3 − /CO 3 2− induces a relatively loose passive film; whereas high concentration of HCO 3 − /CO 3 2− induces a compact passive film behaving a superior pitting resistance. The concentration of HCO 3 − /CO 3 2− plays a significant role on the interaction manner of chloride ions with passive film on FeCr15Ni15Mo2 alloy.
