Numerical investigation of the dynamic compressive behaviour of Al 5083-H116

Dynamic compressive behaviour of Al 5083-H116 is important to understand the characterisation at high strain rates. High strain rates came in to pictures in case of projectiles, marine ships, automobiles, and aerospace industries, where very high velocities exist. To understand the behaviour of materials under dynamic settings, Taylor impact tests, projectile tests, and split-Hopkinson pressure bars (SHPBs) are generally used. However, due to a lack of available resources and prohibitively expensive setups, certain sorts of adjustments are difficult to implement. Conversely, the characterisation of materials under dynamic conditions can be performed by using finite element simulation of SHPB under different conditions. This paper numerically investigates the effects of striker velocity (10, 20, 30, and 40 m/s), striker shape (circular flat, circular round, and square), and specimen shape (circular and square) on the dynamic compressive behaviour of Al 5083-H116 using an SHPB. The Al 5083-H116 behaviour was found to be substantially sensitive on strain rates, striker shapes, and specimen shapes under various situations.
