Verbalization of the concept “own-stranger” (on the material of the paremic fund of the English and Russian languages)

We conduct the comparative analysis of the linguistic representation of the conceptual binary opposition “own-stranger” in English and Russian linguocultures. The research is carried out on the material of proverbs and sayings. Method of continuous sampling from lexicographic sources of the paremic fund of the languages under study was used. The problem of the research is to reveal the development of the opposition “own-stranger” in the national linguoculture, the peculiarities of the linguistic realization of the studied phenomenon and its fixation in the treasury of any national language - the paremic fund, reflecting cultural universality and national specificity. The aim of the study is to identify and describe the national-cultural components, key dominants of the binary opposition “own-stranger” in English and Russian linguocultures. The relevance of the study is determined by the need for further study of the opposition “own-stranger” in the conditions of the growing trend of globalization, integration and multiculturalism and the phenomenon of antiglobalism that appeared to oppose them. As a result the role of concepts in the representation of national linguoculture was determined, as well as the key domains of the concept “own-stranger”: motherland, foreign land, home, friend, enemy, close, distant, etc. The role of concepts in the representation of the national linguoculture was determined. We come to the conclusion that the studied concept is ambivalent, i.e. it reflects different facets and gradations of intercultural and interlingual relations, characterizing and differentiating between cultural and foreign cultural, answering the question where is “own” and where is “stranger”. Theoretical and practical significance of the study lies in the expansion and addition of linguocultural research of basic concepts of national cultures, contributes to the study of the binary opposition “own-stranger”, which can contribute to the understanding of foreign mentality, the successful conduct of intercultural dialogue.
