Enhancing flexibility in a residential energy hub through integrating electric vehicle and energy saving programs

This study explores the integration of various energy infrastructures in residential energy hubs (REHs) to enhance adaptability, cost-efficiency, and sustainability. The primary objective is to optimize energy consumption and local energy trading by incorporating renewable energy sources (RES), energy storage systems, and electric vehicles (EVs) within an energy hub methodology. A mathematical optimization model is developed to analyze the operational dynamics of the REH, considering electricity and natural gas inputs, as well as EV participation. The study introduces a home energy management (HEM) strategy to coordinate solar panels, batteries, and household demand response, aiming to minimize consumer expenses by leveraging time-varying electricity tariffs. The optimization model is implemented and solved using the CPLEX solver in GAMS 38.2 software, enabling a detailed evaluation of cost reduction strategies. The findings reveal that HEM implementation leads to a reduction in daily household electricity payments, while the integration of EVs enhances system flexibility by enabling energy storage and demand-side response. Additionally, the surplus energy generated-combined with EV participation in local energy trading-presents a viable pathway for reducing grid dependence and further lowering customer costs. This research contributes to the literature by addressing the gap in EV-integrated REHs, providing valuable insights into the synergy between energy storage, RES, and demand-side flexibility. The results highlight the importance of holistic energy management approaches, demonstrating their potential in shaping future sustainable residential energy systems.
