The role of lipid peroxidation products and antioxidant enzymes in the pathogenesis of acute abomasoenteritis in calves

The processes of lipid peroxidation (POL) form the basis of damage to cell membranes. The antioxidant system (AOS) is a multicomponent system for regulating oxygen activation processes, without which the normal functioning of the body would be impossible. The state of the body and the physiological course of vital processes depend on the balance and stability between the POL–AOS systems. The imbalance between these systems determines the clinical manifestation, progression, severity, and prognosis of any inflammatory process in the body. The aim of the work was to determine the state of lipid peroxidation products and the activity of the antioxidant system in calves with compensated, subcompensated and decompensated acute abomazoenteritis. It has been established that the body of calves with a compensated degree of disease exhibits significant resistance to the damaging effects of POL processes and is characterized by the release of antioxidant enzymes that completely stop lipoperoxidation products. With a subcompensated degree of acute abomazoenteritis, the classic response of microbial intervention occurs with a typical reaction of acute-phase inflammation, which is accompanied by an adequate increase in AOS indicators with a steady increase in endogenous intoxication products. At the same time, no imbalance was found in the POL-AOS systems, which indicates the benign nature of the inflammatory process. On the contrary, with decompensated severity of the disease, excessive growth of lipoperoxidation products and endogenous intoxication was recorded in the blood serum of calves against the background of complete depletion of AOS.
