Growth Performance of IPB D2 with IPB D3 Chicken Line Crossing and Its Reciprocal
Abstract Developing local chicken into a superior line has the potential to become a valuable national asset. Attempts to enhance the growth performance of local chickens have been made through crossing. The IPB D1 chicken is a composite breed of local meat-type chickens. Its development led to the establishment of the IPB D2 and IPB D3 candidate lines. The IPB D2 chicken is a candidate female line with strong endurance traits, whereas the IPB D3 chicken is a candidate male line with fast growth traits. Crossing IPB D2 chickens with IPB-D3 and its reciprocals is expected to produce offspring with traits similar to those of their parents. This study examined the growth of the IPB D2 line with the IPB D3 chicken line and its reciprocals. Data on body weight, body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion were collected weekly. Data were analyzed descriptively, and a t-test was used to determine the average difference in crossing results based on age and sex. The study showed that feed conversion was the same. However, there were significant differences in body weight, body weight gain, and feed intake on a weekly basis, indicating maternal effects, heterosis effects, genomic imprinting, or sex-linked gene inheritance.
