Crystallographic texture formation at Co-Cr-Mo alloys treated by a scanning electron beam

Abstract The impact of a scanning electron beam on the crystallographic texture of Co-Cr-Mo alloys has been investigated. During the experiments, the beam current was varied between 10 and 15 mA. The structure of both modified and untreated samples was analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electron beam modification induced a phase transformation, converting the initial double-phase structure comprised of the ε-phase with a hexagonal close-packed (HCP) structure (space group P6 3 /mmc (194)) and the γ-phase with a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure (space group Fm3m (225)), into a single γ-FCC phase. Additionally, the modification altered the crystallographic texture. A higher beam current led to the formation of a strong crystallographic texture, with a 100% contribution of the {111} crystallographic planes. These findings provide insights into the structural transformations induced by electron beam processing and their implications for the practical applications of Co-Cr-Mo alloys.
