This article describes the foundations, attributes, functions and central purposes of the internal powers of the Church, particularly the judicial power. The location of this power within a field of understanding that includes the application of justice and mercy as the sole task of those who have the responsibility of applying canon law is also explained. The last section of the article describes the judicial power of the Church in the field of matrimonial cases.
