Utilizing Bimetal-Supported ZSM-5 Zeolite Catalysts Synthesized from Kaolin Clay for Enhanced Exhaust Emission Control in Compression Ignition Engines

This study revolves around synthesizing ZSM-5 zeolite from kaolin clay and utilizing it as a catalyst for reducing NOx emissions in CI engines. Copper (Cu-ZSM5 ) and cerium-doped zeolite (Ce-ZSM5 )coatings on ceramic monoliths exhibit superior activity in swiftly reducing NOx compared to conventional catalytic converters. Experimental trials were conducted on a Mahindra Maximo Diesel engine using an eddy current dynamometer, with emissions monitored via an AVL DI-gas analyzer. Results revealed that the in-house developed Cu-ZSM5 and Ce-ZSM5 catalysts achieve a remarkable 58% reduction in NOx emissions compared to commercial catalytic converters. Moreover, these catalysts demonstrate exceptional efficiency in converting NOx, CO and HC pollutants. The utilization of kaolin clay for synthesizing ZSM-5 zeolite presents an environmentally sustainable approach, repurposing waste materials for beneficial applications.
