A punishment from the mental health act: Voices of offenders with intellectual disabilities on their experience of a secure forensic service

This paper explores the experiences of individuals with intellectual disabilities detained under the Mental Health Act within a forensic mental health service. Arising from a service evaluation, these discussions aimed to improve services. Using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis framework, recurrent themes were identified to inform senior managers and commissioners of how the service could be improved. Despite a small sample size, participants shed light on challenges in accessing support and navigating the forensic pathway. Findings highlight the need for clearer care pathways; greater involvement in care decisions, and enhanced community support. While specific to the reviewed service, the paper offers valuable insights into the lived experiences of this marginalised population, reflecting systemic barriers that may extend to other forensic settings. Easy to read summary ■ We listened to the experiences of people with intellectual disabilities detained in a secure hospital as a project to understand what they need and how they feel. ■ Sometimes, people with intellectual disabilities are kept in secure hospitals for mental health reasons, but there isn’t always a clear plan for their care. ■ They want to be more involved in decisions about their care. ■ They want more support in the community.
