Measuring the satisfaction of a person’s basic need for security: Methodology development
The relevance of the study is due to the lack of a methodology to measure the satisfaction of a person’s need for security as one of the basic psychological needs. The objective of the study is to develop and validate a methodology for measuring the satisfaction of a person’s basic need for security. The article hypothesizes that the proposed tool is sufficiently reliable, valid, and makes it possible to measure and evaluate the satisfaction of a person’s basic need for security. Participants: cadets (N = 500; males = 100%) of Saratov Military Order of Zhukov Red Bannerorder Institute of National Guard Troops of the Russian Federation (Saratov), aged 17 to 26 (M = 20.2; SD = 1.7). Methods (tools): a technique aimed at measuring the satisfaction of a person’s basic need for security (V. O. Akbutayev); to verify the external validity of the proposed tool, the study used the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction Scale (E. L. Deci, R. M. Ryan) and Schwartz’s Value Survey. Results: it has been established that the presented tool is reliable, internally consistent and valid, and allows us to qualitatively measure the satisfaction of a person’s basic need for security. Main conclusions: the results of the study confirm the idea that the need for security is a significant need and can be considered as one of the basic psychological needs; three scales of the satisfaction of the need for security have been identified. Practical Significance: the results obtained can be used for a more objective and detailed assessment of the satisfaction of a person’s basic need for security.
