Power System Harmonics Analysis and Mitigation Using Single-Tuned Filter Based on ETAP

A power supply ideally ought to appear constantly as perfectly sinusoidal to each client area. In many cases, it seems hard to protect such a desirable condition for power systems for various reasons. The difference in both the current and voltage waveforms from ideal waveform is expressed as distortion. Such a phenomenon in electrical network distribution systems rises with wide utility of nonlinear loads. The load is called nonlinear if impedance changes when voltage is applied, because current drawn by the load will be non-sinusoidal even if connected with sinusoidal power supply. It is vital therefore to dissect and assess different types of harmonic present in both electrical distribution systems and in the proper arrangement strategies needed to mitigate them. A single filter and capacitor bank are designed to represent and execute a model made using ETAP software. The framework of the model built for computer simulation is not fully represented in a real-life model. After injecting harmonic current using VFD, the model designed will be tested to identify types of the harmonic and to mitigate them using single filters. In the first situation, overvoltage is represented in the system by using the scheme with capacitor available on ETAP, then by using a single filter for mitigating the fifth and seventh harmonic.
