Abstract

ABSTRACT The rapid advancement of digital technologies has heightened the demand for multifunctional smart materials with adaptive and responsive capabilities. Among these, chromogenic hydrogel composites have emerged as promising candidates for next‐generation digital applications due to their unique stimuli‐responsive behavior. These hydrogels exhibit dynamic optical changes in response to external triggers such as light, temperature, pH, humidity, mechanical stress, and electric or magnetic fields, enabling a wide range of functionalities in data storage, security, authentication, and anti‐counterfeiting technologies. This review provides a comprehensive examination of smart chromogenic hydrogel composites, focusing on their fundamental design principles, stimuli‐responsive mechanisms, and emerging applications in digital systems. The review categorizes these materials based on their chromogenic response, including photochromic, hydrochromic, electrochromic, magnetochromic, thermochromic, tribochromic, and mechanochromic systems, analyzing their key material compositions and functional characteristics. Furthermore, recent advances in fabrication techniques such as 3D and 4D printing, self‐healing networks, and multi‐stimuli‐responsive hydrogels are discussed, highlighting their potential for programmable optical displays, rewritable data storage, and encrypted security systems. Finally, the review identifies current challenges and future directions in the field, emphasizing the need for enhanced durability, faster response times, and improved integration with digital technologies. The insights presented in this work aim to guide the development of next‐generation chromogenic hydrogels for innovative applications in interactive and intelligent materials.
