Influence of He irradiation on BaCe1-xRexO3-δ

Abstract In this work influence of He irradiation on barium cerate doped with Nd, Gd or Y was studied. These materials are proton conductors and widely used in different electrochemical devices as solid electrolytes. The purpose of this work is to study a possibility to improve properties of the materials by He implantation. The samples were irradiated with helium ions at 40 keV, and their structure and conductivity were analyzed. It was shown that irradiation increases the activation energy of conductivity while reducing electronic conductivity, particularly for Nd-doped samples. An improvement of water intercalation capability of irradiated materials was observed. The effects of irradiation persisted after heating up to 750°C, indicating the formation of stable helium-containing complexes.
