Characterisation of PDMS Granulate in Geotechnical Model Tests

Abstract The paper aims at characterisation of the soft granular material which can be successfully used in photo-elastic tests. The granules are manufactured from polidymethylosiloxane (PDMS), a silicone elastomer, in laboratory conditions. A series of tests have been performed to identify the basic parameters of the granular assembly built of PDMS particles. The experimental campaign encompasses the angle of repose, triaxial and axial compression tests. The experimental results will serve as a base for the calibration and validation of numerical models and will help in the conscious design of new experimental setups for photo-elastic tests.
