Micromechanical Behavior of Pipe-Soil Interaction Under Lateral Loading of Buried Pipe Using 3D DEM

Abstract 3D DEM analysis was conducted for a buried pipe with various surface roughness under lateral loading to confirm the applicability of this analytical method to pipe-soil interaction problems by comparing the experimental results reported by previous research. Although the passive resistance forces were smaller than the experimental result, the relationships between the resistance force and the pipe displacement from DEM followed a typical trend. Furthermore, the DEM method was able to display the trajectory of the soil and the distribution of the resistance force from the ground during loading, which is not easy to obtain experimentally.
