Numerical Investigation of Embankment Slope Failure Mitigation Measures Using the Material Point Method

Abstract In this paper, the applicability of the material point method, the consideration of geometric nonlinearity, and the effect of slope-failure mitigation measures are discussed using the earthquake response analysis of embankments. First, the applicability of the material point method was demonstrated by reproducing centrifugal one-side slope-failure experiments. The experimental and numerical results agree in terms of soil mass formation and slope failure modes, indicating the applicability of the material point method to the seismic response analysis of embankments. The numerical model was extended to double-side embankments to investigate the effect of the slope failure mitigation measures. For double-side embankments, toe improvement cannot prevent slope failure of the embankment, whereas plate installation can prevent slope failure.
