Assessing the economic resilience of chili farmers through income analysis

Research on agricultural resilience is crucial as disruptions can significantly affect crop yields, profitability and food security. This study adapts a performance-based measurement approach to assess economic resilience among farmers. It proposes a formula that integrates elements such as flexibility, resourcefulness, collaboration and adaptability into performance metrics. Tested on chili farmers in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the formula evaluates resilience using data from surveys and interviews with farmer groups. Actors’ capabilities are evaluated directly by examining resilience elements through variables influencing performance. The results indicate that a performance-based approach can be adapted to measure the resilience of farmers. The findings reveal that most farmers in Yogyakarta exhibit strong resilience due to their resourcefulness and adaptability, allowing them to use available resources and earn income from alternative sources. This enables them to maintain financial stability despite agricultural disruptions. The research enhances understanding of economic resilience measurement for agricultural actors and offers insights for stakeholders and policymakers. The assessment results can inform targeted support and strategies to enhance farmer resilience. For example, the chili farmers’ case study highlights the need for improved collaboration between chili production centers and better access to banking services.
