Effects of physical exercise and EPA intake in a hyperbaric, hyperoxic environment on vascular endothelial function and cognitive function

Research has proven physical exercise and fish oil (EPA) to be beneficial. Associate Professor Nakao Takehira and Professor Atsushi Saito who are based within the Department of Human Science at Kyushu Sangyo University in Japan are building on this to discover how the human body reacts to physical exercise and EPA intake in a hyperbaric and hyperoxic environment. A possible output of the research is the development of a recommended exercise programme that will benefit wider society and the enhancement of understanding of the effects of a space environment on the human body. Performing regular aerobic exercise and EPA intake in a hyperoxic environment and assessing the impact on vascular endothelial function and cognitive functions has rarely been studied, making this research particularly novel. The researchers want to verify the synergistic effects in these studies, prove safe EPA intake and recommend new exercise programmes. They are also adding the development of safety standards within the objectives of the project ensuring results are both rigorous and beneficial. The potential impact of the project is delaying the decline of physical functions in ageing and promoting recovery from mental and physical fatigue in athletes. Furthermore, excitingly, the research could enhance understanding of the effects of microgravity environments on the human body. Takehira believes that the study may lead to solutions for problems currently experienced in microgravity environments.
