Development of educational programs based on the learning perspectives of nursing students who gain learning experience through lectures, seminars and clinical training
Nurses are always learning and updating their knowledge in line with the ever evolving field of medicine. Yoko Nakayoshi, School of Nursing, Yasuda Women's University, Japan, is developing educational programmes that consider the learning needs of nursing students. Nakayoshi has a background in nursing and has studied what motivates students to continue learning and how to scientifically evaluate the effectiveness of nursing skills. While studying the motivations of students when it comes to learning she found that nursing students have different levels of motivation to gain more knowledge and without educational involvement that is in line with the corresponding stage of learning motivation, students will not engage in independent learning. If education activities are presented that encourage students to move onto the next stage, their motivation to learn increases, as does their proactivity towards their studies. Nakayoshi is also interested in a type of nursing care called the warm compress method and how effective it is. She applies the findings of this research to reaching the impact of nursing care to patients. She is keen to highlight to students the importance of evidence-based nursing. In her current work, Nakayoshi is working to clarify the learning perspectives of nursing students and utilise them in nursing education. She initially explored the factors motivating students and wants to ascertain the individuality factors associated with motivation. Only then can suitable, individual learning be provided.
