Successful conservative management of accessory carpal bone frontal plane fractures: Diagnosis, treatment and long‐term follow‐up in two horses
Abstract Accessory carpal bone fractures are common in horses and may have different aetiologies. Owing to their peculiar shape, internal fixation of these fractures can be challenging for the surgeon, and data on outcomes after surgery are controversial, even if surgical treatment is considered the best approach. The purpose of this report was to describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic procedure and conservative management of two horses affected by a displaced frontal plane fracture of the accessory carpal bone. Both horses were able to return to competition 9 and 12 months after the injury, respectively, despite non‐union of the fracture. Clinicians should consider conservative management when facing accessory carpal bone frontal plane fractures because the outcome described in this study is consistent with that described for different surgical techniques of fracture in internal fixation.
