Fold propagation in tapered-springs: Part II

In Part I, we investigated localization exhibiting systems with spatially varying stress–strain relationships using ‘folded’ tape-springs with varying cross-section geometry. Here, we extend the work to investigate arbitrary variations in cross-section geometry, and in particular non-monotonic variation in the transverse subtended angle. Satisfying the Maxwell equal-areas construction on the propagating front of the fold is shown to result in unusual growth of the fold, where the fold curvature ‘jumps’ discretely between different configurations, with corresponding jumps in bending moment.

Abstract

In Part I, we investigated localization exhibiting systems with spatially varying stress–strain relationships using ‘folded’ tape-springs with varying cross-section geometry. Here, we extend the work to investigate arbitrary variations in cross-section geometry, and in particular non-monotonic variation in the transverse subtended angle. Satisfying the Maxwell equal-areas construction on the propagating front of the fold is shown to result in unusual growth of the fold, where the fold curvature ‘jumps’ discretely between different configurations, with corresponding jumps in bending moment.
