PHRASEOLOGICAL UNITS TRANSLATION

This article is devoted to the study of a specific lexical aspect of translation – namely, the translation of phraseological units. It presents the perspectives of prominent Ukrainian translation scholars on phraseology, its distinctive features, and examines classifications of ways for translating these expressions. At present, phraseology remains one of the least explored areas of linguistics, attracting significant attention from researchers in both theoretical and practical dimensions. Regarding the translation of phraseological units, researchers continue to work on ensuring the adequacy of their translation, as well as overcoming the challenges associated with conveying their semantic and stylistic characteristics. In this context, idiomatic expressions are often classified as difficult to translate or even as untranslatable. The issue of translating phraseological units from one language to another is highly relevant, which justifies its detailed exploration in specialized translation guides, works dedicated to the study of interlingual connections, as well as in separate scholarly monographs. The study of phraseology based on contemporary materials is particularly intriguing, as the modern world is developing at an extraordinarily dynamic pace, with changes occurring not only over years but also over days or even hours. New events of global significance leave a noticeable mark on the formation of contemporary history, which, in turn, influences the development of language, including its phraseology. Over the long period of English language development, a significant number of set expressions have emerged, deeply rooted in history and carrying special cultural and communicative significance. However, the phraseological fund of the English language remains as dynamic as its history. In the context of globalization, the English language has spread even further, and new concepts and values arising within the Anglophone culture have a substantial impact on its phraseological component. This creates an added interest in studying the peculiarities of translating phraseological units into Ukrainian.
