TRANSLATION TRANSFORMATIONS THROUGH THE PRISM OF MODERN UKRAINIAN TRANSLATION STUDIES

The article focuses on the study of translation transformations as a translation category and examines the existing ways of its definition and categorization in Ukrainian translation studies. The aim of the research is to standardize the definition and classification of translation transformation. The objective determined the tasks of the research: to analyse different scholar definitions of the term “translation transformation” and formulate standardized definition; to outline relevant for linguistics and translation studies classifications of translation transformations. Our study relies substantially on the application of linguistic descriptive methodology and devices. The work specifies the nature of translation transformations, their place in translation studies and their role in the original text reproduction. The article defines translation transformation as a way of translation which changes formal or semantic components of the original text while preserving the information and which is characterized by the withdrawal of the semantic and structural parallelism between original and translation. The multifaceted nature of translation transformation as a linguistic phenomenon has led to numerous discussions about its definition and classification. Therefore, the most common classifications of translation transformations were considered and supplemented with our own developments. The research highlights the types of translation transformations, them being lexic: transcription, transliteration, loan translation, concretization, generalization, modulation; grammatic: word-for-word translation, sentence fragmentation, sentence integration, grammatic substitution; lexic-grammatic: antonymic translation, descriptive translation, compensation. The research also emphasizes the need for further study of translation transformations aimed at developing a unified system of translation techniques for these linguistic units.
