Eginhard.
The reviewed edition focuses on the work of the Carolingian scholar and courtier Einhard (c. 770 - c. 840), which narrates the transfer of the relics of the holy martyrs Marcelli-nus and Peter, executed at the beginning of the 4th century, from Rome to Seligenstadt, along with the many miracles that accompanied the event. The publication includes a commented Latin text with a parallel French translation, an extensive scholarly preface, a list of sources and literature. The reviewer highly appreciates this work, noting above all the originality and significant scholarly value of the commentaries. The latter provide important information about the specifics of the language in which Einhard’s work was written, which differs radically from the Life of Charlemagne, another work by the same author. The preface, prepared by leading French specialists, is primarily of a reference nature. Well executed, it guides the reader well on a wide range of issues related to this monument.
