Observation of aerial small-size objects by optoelectronic devices in the infrared range

Subject of study. The detection capability of optoelectronic devices in the infrared range when observing aerial small-size objects is investigated. Aim of study. This study aims to perform a comparative analysis of the detection capabilities of optoelectronic devices based on photodetectors operating in the middle-wave and long-wave infrared ranges when observing aerial small-size objects. Method. The method combines calculations using an analytical model with field measurements. Main results. A theoretical analysis is conducted to determine the threshold radiation power required for object observation and the threshold flux for a photosensitive element. The findings reveal that devices with cooled middle-wave range photodetectors exhibit superior performance compared with long-wave range devices, including both cooled and uncooled photodetectors of similar format and size. Field experiments conducted for observing aerial small-size objects further confirm the superior detection capabilities of devices based on cooled middle-wave range photodetectors compared with long-wave range devices equipped with microbolometric arrays. Practical significance. When selecting the operational spectral range for optoelectronic systems designed to detect aerial small-size objects, the observed advantages of cooled middle-wave range photodetectors in terms of threshold characteristics should be considered.
