Compressive properties of seawater sea‐sand concrete column reinforced with bamboo sheet/<scp>BFRP</scp> composite: Experimental investigation

Abstract This study investigates a novel seawater sea‐sand concrete column reinforced with bamboo sheet/basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) composite (SSCCRBS/Bc). Axial compression tests were conducted on seawater sea‐sand concrete column reinforced with BFRP (SSCCRB) and on SSCCRBS/Bc. The effects of the number of BFRP layers (0, 1, 2, and 3 layers) and the number of bamboo sheet layers (1, 2, and 3 layers) on the mechanical properties of SSCC were discussed. The experimental results indicate that the failure modes of the SSCCRB and SSCCRBS/Bc were primarily characterized by axial cracks in the middle of the specimens. With the increasing number of BFRP layers, the strength and ductility of the SSCCRB were significantly improved, with the ultimate stresses increasing by 69.5%, 32.2%, and 32.9%, and increasing by 70.2%, 83.1%, and 21.8%. With the increasing number of bamboo sheet layers, the strength of SSCCRBS/Bc was slightly improved, with the ultimate stresses increasing by 11.8%, 10.7%, and 9.3%, while ductility was significantly improved, increasing by 61.0%, 26.7%, and 25.4%. Considering the effects of bamboo sheets and BFRP, respectively, the improved models for ultimate stress and axial‐lateral strain were proposed, which applicable both SSCCRB and SSCCRBS/Bc. The predicted results of the improved models align with experimental values. Highlights A new composite structure, SSCCRBS/Bc, is proposed. The effect of bamboo sheet/BFRP on seawater sea‐sand concrete is investigated. Bamboo sheet/BFRP composite offers good mechanical properties to SSCCRBS/Bc. The ultimate stress and axial‐lateral strain models of SSCCRBS/Bc are proposed.
