Elevating green materials sustainability through the integration of ceramic particles

Abstract The use of natural fibers as reinforcements in polymer composites has seen significant growth over recent decades. Despite their potential, these fibers face limitations in high‐temperature environments. To address this, ceramic particles like silicon carbide (SiC) can be introduced to enhance their thermal stability and durability. This study investigates the impact of SiC particles on the thermal and mechanical characteristics of woven bamboo fiber hybrid composites. By incorporating various weight fractions of SiC into an epoxy matrix, hybrid composites with three bamboo fiber/SiC layers were created using the hand layup technique. To comprehend the synergistic impacts of hybridization, mechanical, thermal, and physical characteristics are used to characterize the generated samples. The study's findings demonstrate that adding secondary reinforcement improves the hybrid composites' qualities. Results indicate that adding SiC particles enhances tensile strength, flexural strength, and hardness by 33.9%, 13%, and 5.8%, respectively. Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that thermal properties improved with increased SiC content. Fracture analyses further revealed the role of SiC in reinforcing the bamboo fiber epoxy composites, making them suitable for both structural and thermal applications. Highlights SiC particles were reinforced in bamboo fiber epoxy composites. 10% SiC integration enhances tensile strength and flexural strength by 33.9% and 13%. 87.5 shore D hardness was obtained during 20% SiC integration. TGA witnessed that thermal properties were enhanced with the rise in SiC content. Fracture analyses confirmed that the excess SiC integration aids in crack nucleation.
