Tabarrini L. Estate Management around Florence and Lucca 1000–1250. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2023. XVIII+234 p.+figures 15
The reviewed monograph is dedicated to the problems of the transformation of a medieval estate in Tuscany during the XI-XIII centuries. By the example of the contado cities of Lucca and Florence, Lorenzo Tabarrini (University of Bologna) demonstrates how the socio-political changes of the Central Middle Ages were associated with the evolution of the economic organization of the estate. Based on a thorough study of archival materials, the author paints a convincing picture of socio-economic changes in the Tuscan countryside: the transformation of manorial system, the genesis of mezzadria poderale and other forms of peasant-landowner relations.
