"To express the inexpressible" as a super-task of the Western European novel about the Holocaust ("The Well-wishers" by D. Littell, "HHhH" by L. Binet and "Austerlitz" by V. G. Zebald)

The article analyzes some features of the narrative in modern Western European novels dedicated to the theme of the Holocaust. The purpose of the work is to identify the specific features of the works of this subject. The research is based on the material of "The Well-wishers" by D. Littell, "HHhH" by L. Binet and "Austerlitz" by V. G. Zebald. To date, no comparative analysis of the genre features of these novels has been un dertaken. This determines the relevance of this work. In the course of studying the works, the principles of cultural-historical, comparative-historical, comparative-typological methods, as well as the method of narrative analysis were used. It is established that L. Binet contrasts the narrative manner in his infra-novel "HHhH" with that which dominates in D. Littell's "The Well-Wishers" and can be called classical: it does not allow fictional persons and events, artistic methods of representation, demonstrates the maximum convergence of the author and the narrator. An appeal to Roman D. Littell allows you to see the diametrically opposite author's strategy. The "character-based" narrative brings "The Well-wishers" closer to the novel by V. G. Zebald. The sparse use of visual and expressive means in the novel "Austerlitz" allows us to draw a number of parallels with L. Binet's "HHhH". The discovery of various genre models of the historical novel in the process of research allows us to see in each work the authors' desire to find means capable of describing events beyond the human mind. In conclusion, we conclude that L. Binet, D. Littell and V. G. Zebald is brought closer by the realization of the impos sibility of "expressing the inexpressible," which can be called a kind of narratological universal, a specific feature of reflecting the theme of the Holocaust in modern Western European historical prose. This designation contains the novelty of the proposed research.
