Research on Marriage Freedom in the Central Revolutionary Base Area (1927–1934)

Abstract The practice of marriage freedom during the period of the Central Revolutionary Base Area of the Chinese Communist Party ( CCP ) underwent a process of continuous exploration, trial, and adjustment. Initially, the CCP aimed to implement the concept of absolute marriage freedom in rural areas; however, the practice led to the issue of “sexual freedom,” which hindered the advancement of class revolution. The CCP responded by enacting marriage regulations to continuously adjust the concept and policy of marriage freedom, gradually positioning it within the scope acceptable to revolutionary realities. The practice of marriage freedom was intrinsically linked to class revolution and exhibited a phased characteristic of moving from “liberation” to “restraint” as the class revolution advanced. This reflects the complexity of localizing Central Committee policies and the interplay between marriage freedom policies and Soviet governance.
