Effect of magnesium on soil properties, leaf nutrient concentration and nutrient uptake by banana Cv. Grand Naine
The field experiment entitled, “Effect of magnesium on growth, yield, soil properties and nutrient uptake by banana” was conducted at Banana Research Station (MPKV), Jalgaon during mrug bag season 2023-24 with an objective to study the effect of magnesium on soil properties and nutrient uptake by banana Cv. Grand naine. Treatments were composed of T1: GRDF (150:60:150 g N:P2O5:K2O +10 kg FYM per plant), T2: GRDF + 10 g plant-1 Magnesium Sulphate, T3: GRDF + 20 g plant-1 Magnesium Sulphate, T4: GRDF + 30 g plant-1 Magnesium Sulphate, T5: GRDF +40 g plant-1 Magnesium Sulphate, T6: GRDF +50 g plant-1 Magnesium Sulphate. The differences among soil pH and electrical conductivity at harvest of banana were statistically not significant. Significantly higher soil available N (198 kg ha-1), soil available P (18.9 kg ha-1) and soil available K (658 kg ha-1) were recorded in control treatment of GRDF (T1), however, significantly higher exchangeable Mg in soil [16.59 cmol(p+) kg-1] was recorded in the treatment of GRDF + 50 g plant-1 MgSO4 (T6) at harvest of banana. The treatment of GRDF + 30 g plant-1 MgSO4 (T4) recorded significantly higher nitrogen uptake (611 kg ha-1), phosphorus uptake (109.91 kg ha-1) and potassium uptake (1196 kg ha-1), however, treatment of GRDF + 50 g plant-1 MgSO4 (T6) recorded significantly higher magnesium uptake (123.1 kg ha-1) by banana.
