Technological Acceptation Model for Processes Improvement: An Innovative Educational Experience Using Virtual Reality

The study explores the critical need for universities to adapt their academic programs in response to the rapid technological advancements shaping modern industries, particularly within the context of Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0. In this regard, the research emphasizes the importance of bridging the gap between industry demands for highly qualified graduates and the existing educational strategies employed by universities. The study was conducted at one of Mexico's leading private engineering universities, focusing on the student experience with immersive technologies. We designed a hands-on project where students were tasked with producing three-dimensional videos of specific processes. These videos were then analyzed using Oculus Rift virtual reality technology, enabling students to visualize and suggest improvements to their work in a 3D immersive environment. This approach not only enhances the learning process but also encourages students to engage actively with the content, fostering a deeper understanding of complex engineering concepts. Our study proposes a set of simple arithmetic technological acceptance indices, derived from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) framework, to assess student perceptions of the immersive learning methods employed in the project. Our objectives are twofold: first, to measure the engineering students' ability to develop and utilize 3D videos within immersive scenarios, focusing on central and targeted learning objectives; and second, to evaluate the user experience and perceived usability of these immersive methods from the students' perspective. The findings from this study will serve as a guide for future adaptations and enhancements in technological education experiences, ensuring that educational institutions can effectively prepare students for the evolving demands of the workforce in a rapidly changing technological landscape. By leveraging insights gained from the technological acceptance indices, educators can refine their teaching and learning approaches, ultimately fostering a generation of graduates well-equipped to thrive in the complexities of modern industries.
