Case reports of extrinsic tooth staining by açaí (Euterpe oleracea Martius): açaí-stained teeth
The increase in global consumption of açaí (Euterpe oleracea Martius), a fruit harvested mainly in the Brazilian Amazon region, can lead to the occurrence of dark spots on healthy tooth surfaces and restorative materials, compromising the aesthetics and dental health of the patient. Understanding that this fruit is being consumed worldwide, and the importance of a differentiated diagnosis, the authors of this article selected six cases of dental stains caused by the daily consumption of açaí in a city in northern Brazil - Igarapé-Mirim. Dark brown vertical dotted lines were observed in the palatal region of maxillary anterior teeth, which can confuse dentists with dental pathologies. Therefore, it is important to clarify to dentists that the combination of clinical characteristics with information about patients' eating and hygiene habits must be carried out during the anamnesis, as it is essential for the correct diagnosis, and the treatment of stain removal with coronal polishing, preventing the accumulation of plaque that can compromise the patient's oral health.
