Scabies
Key Points Scabies is a contagious dermatitis characterized by intense pruritus and an erythematous eruption, which may present as violaceous, gray, or dark brown in individuals with darker skin tones. It is caused by parasitic mites (Sarcoptes scabiei subspecies hominis). Transmission typically occurs through prolonged close personal contact; indirect transmission can occur via fomites (eg, bedding, clothing). Permethrin 5% cream is the criterion standard treatment; oral ivermectin is an alternative. Proper application of topical treatment and decontamination of fomites are crucial to prevent reinfestation. All close contacts should be treated simultaneously to avoid reinfection.
