Adaptive turbine-generator dynamics and alignment utilizing active journal bearings: An analytical investigation on system modelling and control
The paper demonstrates the efficiency of a novel active oil-film journal bearing to align and to stabilize turbine-generators during operation. The study provides detailed insights into the mechanical layout, principle of operation, lubrication model, and actuation mechanism of the proposed oil-film journal bearing with actively positioned pads. The virtual experiments account for noise and uncertainties. Parameter estimation using Kalman filter and least squares regressor is proved to be efficient for the real-time estimation of the lowest damping ratio in the system, which is adjusted to desired values, ensuring safe and smooth operation of the machine despite distortions in the foundation, bearing pedestals, or other deviations in physical and geometric parameters. The shaft train is adjusted for minimum power loss operation.
