A Wearable Gait Monitoring System Integrating High-Spatial-Resolution Pressure Insoles and Inertial Measurement Unit
Current wearable gait monitoring systems typically face challenges in measurement accuracy, limiting their use in medical-grade evaluations. In this study, a wearable gait monitoring system was developed, comprising a pair of intelligent insoles that integrate a high-spatial-resolution pressure sensor array, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). By combining these, synchronized monitoring of spatiotemporal and plantar pressure parameters can be achieved. Interleaved network multiplexing sensing units were designed to achieve high spatial pressure resolution of 5.2 points/cm2. Enabling precise monitoring of temporal and plantar pressure parameters. Various filtering schemes were evaluated to enhance IMU signal denoising, further improving spatial parameter accuracy. The root mean square error of the length of plantar pressure center trajectory was experimentally confirmed as low as 0.48 ± 0.48 cm. The accuracies of spatial parameters were comparable to existing research. This high-precision wearable gait monitoring system shows promise for enabling long-term, home-based monitoring of chronic diseases affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.
