Advancement in Nanocarrier-Based Whitening Cosmetics: Mechanisms, Applications, and Future Prospects

Demand for skin-whitening products driven by jittery is leading transmutation in cosmetics formulation, even more so with nanotechnology. The one responsible for the complexion is a splash of melanin, the overproduction of which leads to the major cause behind hyperpigmentation issues. This review illustrates the main mechanisms of skin lightening, different categories of nanocarrier-based whitening cosmetics, and alternative strategies to enhance the efficacy, stability as well as skin permeation of nanocarrier-based active compounds. In specific, this review discussed the advantages of various common key whitening agents, including vitamin C and arbutin, and also the relevant obstacles to resolve, including inferior solubility, low permeability, low stability, and so on. To overcome such obstacles, this review concluded several known nanocarriers, including liposomes, nanoparticles of solid lipid (SLNs), polymeric nanoparticles, and lipid carriers with nanostructures (NLCs), which have consistently been both fabricated and claimed for sustained penetration, retainable release, and enhanced bioavailability. Nanocarriers have distinctive physicochemical characterstics to target and sequential deliver hydrophilic whitening agents into the dermis without skin itch and side effect while enhancing whitening effect. Some of these carriers have been shown to have clinical level and in vitro efficacy to ensure even and long-lasting improvement of skin tone. However, there are numerous impediments underlying formulation stability, strict adherence to regulatory standards, and possible toxicity that limit their application as nanocarriers in the whitening cosmeceuticals. The subsequent research summary will emphasize the design, development, and evaluation of biocompatible, sustainable, and personalized nanocarrier systems to meet consumer and legislative standards. The new entry in the cosmetics industry is a skin-whitening formula with nanocarriers. Advances in nanotechnology will allow its usage in product improvements, so consumers around the world will receive more effective and safe skin-whitening products.
